Day 16: Washington DC

Hello Hello!

This is going to be somewhat brief, because I am a little sick =(

We took the Metro into the city this morning. It's exactly like BART... except really noisy and sometimes you feel like the train is going to fly off the tracks. Luckily it didn't (at least not this time). When we got off the Metro, we found a really good little asian food place. I think it was Korean, but we're not quite sure. It served a lot of different foods. So we started off the day on a good note, eating lunch there.

We made our way down the street and came to the White House. For those of you who don't know, that is where the President lives.

We walked around the National Mall, and saw some cool things.

We went to the Smithsonians, and were going to start at the American History Museum. But as we approached the building, we discovered that it was closed. Until Fall. Which is absolutely ridiculous. That was really disappointing. So we went to the National Gallery of Art instead. It was fabulous! They had so many amazing pieces of art. They had pieces from all different eras, so it was interesting to see the different trends and styles both in the artwork and in the subjects being painted. The Impressionism was amazing! They had some Monet, Van Gogh, and my personal favorite, Degas.

This is one of my favorite paintings! I love Degas dancers, and it was amazing to see them!

My Dad loves Van Gogh.

After we finished at the Art Gallery, it was getting later so we couldn't go to any other smithsonians. And when we went outside to walk the 4-ish blocks to the nearest Metro station, we realized that it was pouring rain. It had been sunny and warm earlier in the day, so we didn't expect there to be a major downpour when we came out! When the rain lightened briefly, we decided to make a dash for the Metro. But part way there, we realized that a lot of emergency vehicles, especially fire trucks and ambulances, were farther down the mall. As we got closer we could see why.

I don't think it will make the news at home, but it did here. Apparently, a big group of kids went into these tents (they were being set up for an event next month) to get out of the rain. But that's when the storm got really bad, and the wind and rain caused the tents to collapse in on the kids. 10 people were injured, 7 of them were kids, but they were all minor injuries.

So we walked down to get a closer view, of course. There were news vans already there. By now the rain has picked up, so it is pouring once again. We finally walk down the street to the metro, and as I'm sure you can imagine, we were soaking wet.

I was definitely happy to get back to the hotel and take a hot shower!

So our first day in D.C. was a lot of fun!

I know how you must have felt when the American History Museum was closed. You had said that it was one of the most important places you wanted to see. I guess you will have to wait to see Julia's kitchen. That is actually a museum I would enjoy too. Guess we will wait until Fall.
You looked like drowned rats after the rain storm. I would have looked worse.
Did George and Laura come out to greet you. Sometimes they do, you know. What about your tour of the Pentagon...is that going to happen?
Jenn, are you really sick? I am sorry...it is always better to be at home when sick.
Is Jimmy graduating this week? Jason Wensley had a party last Saturday and you were invited also. We did not go and I feel kind of sorry that we did not. Congratulations, Jimmy. We will celebrate when you get home.
Winnie's jammies are dry now and he has them on so I guess we better get snuggled into our bed.
I hope that you feel better, Jenn, because custard won't fly!
Love and Hugs,
